Representing the Dubes of KwaDukuza in KwaZulu-Natal—the indigenous citadel established by Nkosi Shaka kaSenzangakhona “King Shaka Zulu”— creating beadwork is my gateway to receiving communication from my ancestors. She holds a BFA in Fashion Design and is currently completing a Master’s degree in Global Fashion Management at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT)\, to be awarded May 2026. \nLenese serves as an Adjunct Professor at FIT\, where she teaches fashion business and production-related coursework\, bringing real-world industry experience directly into the classroom. DESCRIPTION:In Conversation with Beau McCall aka “The Button Man” \nBeau McCall proclaimed by American Craft magazine as “The Button Man”—creates visual and wearable artworks by hand-sewing predominantly secondhand and donated buttons onto mostly upcycled fabrics and materials. Through his award-winning practice\, McCall extends the button’s role as both material and storytelling device to explore themes of identity\, memory\, pop culture\, and social justice. His artworks are held in the permanent collection of numerous institutions\, including the Getty Research Institute (Los Angeles\, CA); Museum of Arts and Design (New York\, NY); The Museum at FIT (New York\, NY); Philadelphia Museum of Art (Philadelphia\, PA); Victoria and Albert Museum (London\, UK); and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture (New York\, NY). In 2024\, McCall debuted his first-ever retrospective and exhibition catalog titled\, Beau McCall: Buttons On! at Fuller Craft Museum (Brockton\, MA). The exhibition is currently on a nationwide tour. In McCall’s words\, his artistic practice is rooted in the belief that “with a teeny tiny button you can create\, you can have a voice\, and you can inspire.”

DESCRIPTION:Two session one fee November 14 and 15 – 12pm-3pm \nThe process of three-layer quilting with a printed design introduces hand quilting skills to help you develop proficiency in the art of quilting. Havanna will guide you through the process of top\, middle and backing to echo and embellish your cheater design. \nHavanna Fisher is a multi-interdisciplinary artist\, designer\, and educator from Harlem who uses design\, performing arts\, film\, and education to bring about political and social awareness—and thus probable change—within the American landscape of ideological identity. She received a BFA in Fashion Design from Parsons School of Design and a BA in the Arts with a concentration in contemporary dance from Eugene Lang College. Her goal as an artist is to blend different art forms like fashion\, dance\, acting\, and film\, emphasizing community and unity to create a world of many possible approaches to living life and building a new\, just society. \nAt the heart of Havanna’s practice is a deep love for creating stories that honor and bring to light forgotten histories—unearthing the untold and suppressed narratives of the African Diaspora and marginalized communities\, and reimagining them as living\, breathing works that expand public consciousness. DESCRIPTION:ME AND MY AMAZING LIFE – Pictorial textile book \nWhat to bring: Please bring photos that tell your personal story for your pictorial textile book. \nHow do we tell our stories with objects and textiles?  Dindga McCannon will take you on your personal journey of design and discovery\, to create your memories and celebrate you. \nDindga McCannon’s use of personal objects\, photographs\, and ephemera focuses on the history and stories of women—both well-known public figures and unknown family and friends who have shaped her world. \nA third-generation Harlemite\, Dindga McCannon’s multidisciplinary practice features mixed-media quilts\, textiles\, paintings\, and sculptures. At age ten\, she told her parents she wanted to be an artist and went on to attend high school for fashion design. In 1964\, she joined the Twentieth Century Art Creators collective. When the group split soon after\, she became a member of the Afrocentric faction\, the Weusi Artist Collective. The men in Weusi helped McCannon—one of only two women members—to learn how to stretch a canvas and present her first solo exhibition at a small coffee shop. At the same time\, McCannon attended night school at City College and studied at the Art Students League under the likes of Jacob Lawrence\, Charles Alston\, and Richard Mayhew. \nMcCannon\, like other women of the time\, had to balance personal responsibilities while confronting pervasive racism and sexism. In response\, she cofounded Where We at Black Women Artists with Faith Ringgold and Kay Brown. This group of Black women fostered community as a creative outlet and supported each other with childcare and financial needs. A 2017 exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum\, We Wanted a Revolution: Black Radical Women 1965–1985\, included a painting made by McCannon in 1975\, and brought attention to the collective and to McCannon’s practice specifically. Her use of personal objects\, photographs\, and ephemera focuses on the history and stories of women—both well-known public figures and unknown family and friends who have shaped her world.
